This increase was recorded in all regions of the country, with Greater Lisbon (259,544 more foreigners) and the North (191,523 more) standing out as the places where this growth was greatest. It is, moreover, in these two regions that the highest values of foreigners in Portugal are concentrated. More than 34% of immigrants reside in Greater Lisbon and almost 20% live in the North of the country.
However, while it is true that in absolute terms, Greater Lisbon and the North concentrate more than half of the foreign population, the Algarve – with 161,556 foreigners – stands out as the region with the highest proportion of immigrants in the population, at 27.9%. In the opposite direction, it is the Autonomous Region of the Azores that counts fewer foreigners among the local population.

Angola in second place, after Brazil
It is true that, with the general increase in the foreign population in Portugal, the percentage of Brazilian citizens even fell from 2021 to 2025. This is, however, the most represented nationality in the immigrant universe. Almost 36% of foreigners are Brazilian, with a total of 574,195 residents. A figure that in absolute terms has more than doubled in the last four years.
The second most represented nation in the immigrant community is Angola, with 103,140 inhabitants (and 6.5% of the total), followed by India (93,683, representing 5.9%), Cape Verde (76,099 inhabitants) and Nepal (56,866). This is followed by the population from Bangladesh, which, with 56,724 residents, recorded the largest increases between 2021 and 2025 (230.5%).
It should be noted that, although they are official, these figures published by the INE are only estimates. For the calculation, the INE used data from the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), integrating values from other administrative sources, such as Social Security, the Ministry of Education or the Tax Authority.
